Abstract:
The difference, dPA, between the structural and polarization
position angles has been measured for 209 extragalactic radio sources.
For highly-polarized sources the distribution of dPA shows clear peaks
at PA=90 and 0 deg, with very few sources at intermediate values of dPA.
As the polarization decreases, the distribution becomes smeared out,
and the peak at PA=0d quickly disappears. The correlation between
radio luminosity and dPA, seen by Haves & Conway (1975MNRAS.173P..53H),
is much stronger for highly-polarized sources.
Sources with maximum polarization >=11% and PA~90 or ~0d are almost
always classical doubles with narrow, collinear structure, while sources
with lower p_max OR intermediate PA tend to have off-axis structure.
The investigation of this large sample suggests that magnetic fields
within tails and bridges in radio sources may always be symmetrical
about the radio trails, even for sources with low polarization and
    off-axis structure.
