Description

"A Catalogue of Extragalactic Radio Source Identifications" (1983) is a compilation of all published optical identifications of extragalactic radio sources. The present machine-readable catalog is an electronic version of the one published by Veron-Cetty and Veron , A&AS 53, 219 (1983), and contains 14,585 identifications for 10,173 different radio sources, and citations to 917 papers. Completeness has been attempted for all papers published through the end of 1982, but see the table of overlooked references below. The authors have prepared this final version and have discontinued future updates.

Source Catalog Reference: Veron-Cetty, M. P. and Veron, P. 1983, A&AS 53, 219.

Documentation Reference: Warren Jr., W. H. 1983, NSSDC/WDC-A-R&S 83-12

Note that the compilation does not contain many papers on radio surveys of galaxies, thus lacking implicit information on optical identifications of extragalactic sources. Following is a list of 38 references (published before 1983) containing data on optical identifications of (bona fide) extragalactic radio sources, but not included in the 'Catalogue of optical identifications of extragalactic radio sources' (Veron-Cetty & Veron 1983, A&AS 53, 219). The total number of objects contained in these papers (maybe not all of them with optical IDs) is N=3492, i.e. 24% of the number of entries, or 34% of the number of sources in the V&V 1983 compilation.

Example (name) (char12): 'PKS 0003+15')

2. COLUMN name_4c

This column contains the identification number of the source in the
Fourth Cambridge Radio Survey Catalogue (4C) (table rad_4c; Pilkington
and Scott 1965; Gower, Scott and Wills 1967).

Example (name_4c) (char6): '+15.01'

3. COLUMNS ra_1950_deg dec_1950_deg ra_1950 dec_1950

These columns contain the B1950 position of the source, in degrees and
in radians.
The position given in the source publication is generally used without
any attempt to report the best available position; therefore, the positions
can differ for catalog entries for the same source as taken from various
references.

Example (ra_1950_deg) (real): 0.855417
Example (dec_1950_deg) (real): 15.886666
Example (ra_1950) (real): 0.014930
Example (dec_1950) (real): 0.27727

4. COLUMNS mag mag_flg

The mag column contains the magnitude estimate for the identification
of the source as given in the reference. Data are inhomogeneous and
generally only rough estimates; hence, caution is advised in their use.
The mag_flg column reports on the precision of the magnitude as follows:

     "-" for 18.
     " " for 18.0
     "+" for 18.00

Example (mag) (real): 16.20
Example (mag_flg) (char1): '+'

5. COLUMNS id_type id_ref id_name id_code id_code_ref

The id_type column contains a letter code indicating the nature of the
proposed identification. The codes are defined below. When this field is
blank, a finding chart has been published, but no identification proposed.

Codes for Nature of the Proposed Identification:

Code Type of Object
---- --------------
B Blue or bluish object. Appears for references 319 and 377:
should probably be interpreted as Q.

EF Empty field.

G Galaxy. The type has not been retained, even if suggested
              in the reference.

H2 H II region.

OF Obscured field

Q Quasi-stellar object.

The id_ref column contains the reference for the identification, as
cited in the associated reference catalog for this catalog (see below).

The id_name column contains the optical name for the identification,
using the following abbreviations:

Abbreviation(s) Reference(s)

    A Abell's clusters of galaxies (Abell 1958).
    M Messier Catalogue.

    VV Vorontsov-Velyaminov (1959).
ZW, ZW, CL Zwicky et al. (1961).
    AKN Arakelian (1975).
    B Braccesi et al. (1970).
LB Luyten blue star (Luyten 1962).
MARK Markarian (1967, 1969a and b); Markarian and Lipovetski
                    (1971,1972, 1973, 1974, 1976a and b); Markarian et al.
                    (1977a and b,1979a and b, 1981).
PB Berger and Fringant (1977, 1980).
    PG Schmidt and Green (1983).
PHL Palomar Haro-Luyten Object (Haro and Luyten 1962).
    POX Kunth et al. (1981).
TON Iriarte and Chavira (1957); Chavira (1958 and 1959).

The id_code column contains the code for confirmation or invalidation of
the identification:

    * : subsequent spectrum showed that proposed identification is a star.
Q : subsequent spectrum showed that proposed identification is really a
        QSO (quasar).
W : identification was discarded on the basis of a better radio or optical
        position.
OK: identification was confirmed by means of accurate radio and optical
positions; or, in the case of a quasar, by measuring its UBV color
        photoelectrically.
EF: proposed identification was discarded and the field shown to be empty,
or the preceding classification as an empty field was confirmed.
OF: proposed identification was discarded and the field shown to be
        obscured.

The id_code_ref is reference for the information for id_code. See the
"References" section below for references.

Example (id_type) (char2): 'Q'
Example (id_ref) (int): 671
Example (id_name) (char10): 'PHL 658'
Example (id_code) (char2): 'Q'
Example (id_code_ref) (int): 244

6. COLUMNS fc_flg add_flg

The fc_flg column contains a running number, if more than one ID
is given. If several finding charts have been published for the same
source, and if these identifications are not confirmed, a running number
for each proposed identification is given; if two charts have the same
number in this field, then the two proposed identifications are identical.
The add_flg is a flag for additions made to the catalog -- blank if in
original published catalog; 1, 2,... if added in 1974, 1975, ....

Example (fc_flg) (int): 1
Example (add_flg) (int): 1

7. COLUMNS z z_flg z_ref

The z column contains the redshift of the identification. The z_flg
column contains information about the redshift such as 'OK' (indicating
that the spectrum is continuous), '*?', '*', or 'Q'. Redshift values are
reported to varying precision.
The z_ref column contains a reference for the spectrum. If this
field is not blank when the redshift field (z) is, then the spectrum is
inconclusive. Otherwise this reference number can be resolved in the
reference listing below in the "References" section.

Example (z) (real): 0.450
Example (z_flg) (char3): 'OK'
Example (z_ref) (int): 244

8. COLUMN ef_flg

This column contains an asterisk (*) when the id_code contains "EF"
and there is no published finding chart.

Example (ef_flg) (char1): '*'

Additional Information

The machine-readable file "A Catalogue of extragalactic radio source identifications" was received at NASA-ADC on magnetic tape on 1 November 1983 from Dr. M. P. Veron-Cetty. As received, the data were contained in one file with a "997" record separating the references and data, and a "FIN" record delimiting the file. The following modifications were made in order to effect uniformity with other computerized catalogs and to make the data easier to process and search by computer.

1. The data and references were separated and placed into individual files, while the "FIN" record and "997" record were removed.

2. Plus signs were added to positive 4C numbers and declination degree fields (previously blank).

The data file was left as originally ordered: by increasing right ascension (B1950).

MODIFICATIONS MADE AT CDS (June 1993, F. Ochsenbein) Two errors were detected and corrected at CDS at lines #11377 (seconds of DEC) and #13069 (& sign in magnitude column). Also a new column (r_z) containing the notes related to the redshift has been added; the redshift column (z) has been transformed to a fully numeric field. Errors reported by H. Andernach and fixed on 22-Jun-1993: #879, source PKS 0056-00: decimal point of redshift missing in z-column #4725, source 0831+280: wrong RA-hour, should be 8, not 0

Further Acknowledgements

Appreciation is expressed to L. S. Fischer for supplying a preliminary version
of the catalog on magnetic tape and to M. P. Veron-Cetty for supplying a
magnetic tape of the final version, for thoroughly reviewing a draft copy of
this document and making many valuable comments, and for supplying new code
definitions for codes which had been added since the 1974 version.
